Mechanical Services :: Solar Electric Systems

Solar panels are quickly becoming one of the more favoured installments in homes around North America. With new developments in the industry, solar panels can now replace anything from roofing tiles, to out door light fixtures. The solar panels can collect, store and supply energy for residential homes - reducing power consumption from the public grid and helping the environment.

Components

The Array
Several modules wired together in parallel or series is called an "array".  The array determines the current drawn from the system, or directed to battery storage.

The Charge Controller
Battery life and safety depend on proper charging of the batteries.  A charge controller regulates the voltage and current reaching the batteries from the solar array, and prevents the batteries from overcharging.  Some controllers also track the electricity generated from the panels - many homeowners choose to do this as it enables them to quantify their bragging rights of free power!

Batteries
Storage is the limiting factor in any solar system.  Your power requirement in both amperage and desired duration of autonomous power determine how big your battery bank will be.  While simple systems can use golf cart batteries, more reliable performance across a broader range of operating temperatures can be gleaned from solar-specific batteries.

Inverter
Solar power is produced in direct current (DC) form.  Using an inverter allows you to use electric appliances designed for standard alternating current (AC).  Some "off-grid" solar users prefer to run DC appliances, as this allows better system efficiency, though not the same breadth of power seen on AC systems.

Installation Process

1. Solar Home Inspection
For proper installation, an inspection of the house must first be completed in order to maximize the performance for your installation. A certified VerdaTech solar professional will organize a time to meet to determine the best location to install your solar electric system.
2. Professional Installation
A specialized VerdaTech installation team will deliver and install your solar electric system. The installation normally takes only a couple of days and involves complete installation of the solar collectors.
3. Enjoy the Savings and help the Environment By installing a solar electric system you will save money on your energy bill (or even earn money), improve your home's energy efficiency and also contribute to a cleaner environment by reducing greenhouse gases.
